TitleHaemoglobinometer in Case
Date1900-1949
Creator NameC. Reichert, Optical Equipment Company, 1876-
DescriptionThe faux-leather covered wooden case can be opened by releasing the two hooks. Once opened, both the lid and the base are covered with green silk and green velvet. The lid features golden-ink writing "C. REICHERT WIEN," whereas the base has compartments for storing the haemoglobinometer, the lens, a small pipette, and a glass bar.

The haemoglobinometer is made of metal, with a U-shaped heavy base for stability, enamelled in black. It is connected to a tube (called the arm) in which the device's illuminator, a circular mirror that rotates, is inserted. On top of it, there is a square metal piece with a round hole in the middle (called the stage) and an oval fenestration.

A rectangular scale (ranging from 0 to 120mm) with a fenestration in which a piece of glass is inserted can slide in. The glass shades from clear to red. The scale piece features the engraving "n. 2898," as does the stage. The scale piece can be adjusted from left to right by rotating the round-mounted knob on the arm.
The base in engraved with "C. REICHERT" and " C. Baker 244 High Holborn London"

A haemoglobinometer is a medical device used to measure the concentration of hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is an essential protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and removes carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs.
After adding the blood sample to the acid solution, the glass scale in the haemoglobinometer acts as a comparator for the color of the blood, ensuring an accurate reading.
