TitleLister's Bougie
Date1925-1975
Creator NameFannin, Medical supply company, 1829-
DescriptionThis is a Lister's Bougie, a urethral metal probe. It features a nickel-plated metal shaft with a ring on one end and a bulbous tip on the other. The ring is engraved with the numbers "7," "16," and "10," while the shaft is marked with "Fannin Dublin & Belfast." Signs of wear and tear are present, as the plating is flaking off.

Lister's Bougies, named after British surgeon Joseph Lister (1827-1912), are used to dilate the urethra and facilitate the passage of instruments or catheters. They help in diagnosing and treating urethral strictures by gradually increasing the diameter of the urethra.
