| Title | Geoffrey Bewley's Binaural Stethoscope |
| Date | 1900-1949 |
| Creator Name | George P. Pilling & Son Co.; 1900-1960; medical and surgical equipment manufacturer |
| Description | Owned by Dr Geoffrey Bewley, this binaural stethoscope is composed of a long black rubber body, wooden eartips and metal diaphragm with inscription of the manufacturer. Inscription says it is "Bowles Patent", which was a stethoscope designed to provide a better sound and a non-compressible stem. There is no drum or bell on the diaphragm which is typical for this design. Stems could normally be easily bent and therefore impede the sound to the eartips. Bowles claimed that by not having this stem, it meant clothes did not have to be removed for the procedure. The patent was applied for in 1894, and succeeded in 1901, which is indicated on the chest piece. |
