In the Foreword section a handwritten note from the Lord Mayor reads 'Today we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the accession of our Sovereign King George V who with Queen Mary has ruled over us wisely and well. Their majesties have done their duty to the Empire through dark and troubles times. The school children of the City of Portsmouth, to whom these book are being presented, should at school, at [ ] and at home, endeavour to [emulate] the example which their majesties have set, and thus [ ] worthy members of our Great Empire - an Empire upon which the sun never sets.'
