DescriptionSquare, wood engraving block depicting the seal of the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Ireland (later RCPI). On the shield in the centre is Hercules slaying the Hydra, the harp of Ireland in one corner and a helmet with a pelican on top. Standing either side of the shield are the gods Mercury and Apollo. Underneath is the motto "INVIDET ORCO" and surrounding the whole is the text (in reverse) "SIGILLVM COLLEGII MEDICORVM REGIS ET REGINÆ IN HIBERNIA". Possible maker's name "HANLON" present on two sides (on one side it is written upside down). Possibly used to illustrate Dr. Belcher's "Memoir of John Stearne..." (1865, p. 30). The Hercules seal was used by the College from 1692-1863.
