| Description | James F FitzGerald was the son of Martin FitzGerald, and grandson of Alexis FitzGerald. James was the brother of Alexis FitzGerald (1831-1878) and Oliver FitzGerald (1833-1903).
This series is arranged into five files, which cover James's medical training and Royal Navy career. His 28 medical training certificates, awarded to him by the Catholic University of Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Mercer's Hospital Dublin and the Meath Hospital are arranged chronologically and by institution. The series also contains James's hospital and lecture notes.
In 1860, James joined the Royal Navy as Assistant Surgeon. His work is presented in the final two files which contain HMS Royal Albert, Princess Royal, Revenge and Bellerophon crew sick logs and one photograph of James in his Royal Navy uniform.
The series also contains objects and four books which James acquired as 'prizeman' and 'gold medalist'. These are located in the library catalogue. They are;
