| Description | Printed poster for Donnybrook Fair. A fair had been held on the site since the middle ages but in 1855 the sister of the last license holder John Madden sold the rights to the fair to a group of clergymen who wanted to stop the fair on moral grounds. During the 1860s Joseph Dillon, a nephew of Madden, attempted to revive the fair on his own land. Attempts to prevent Dillon's fair failed on legal grounds and fairs were held from 1860 to 1866, this poster relate to one of the 1860s fairs. |
