Title
The Society for Bettering the condition of the Poor in England model for Ireland
Date
c.1799
Creator Name
Society for Promoting the Comfort of the Poor
Description
A handwritten work outlining the differences seen between the poor in Ireland and England with particular emphasis on the charitable institutions that are set up in both countries. The writer states that the “Society for Bettering the Conditions of the Poor” in England has been made the model for a similar institution in Ireland (presumably a reference to the Society for the Promotion of Comfort to the Poor) and discusses various elements of this institution. The author of the work goes into detail on the conditions of the poor in Ireland mentioning food, goods, and labour practices. Manufacturing is a topic that is discussed at length. The side of the final page contains an underlined note stating “proposed as part of preface”. This suggests that this document was perhaps the outline for a larger work or publication on Societies supporting both the poor in Ireland and England and the institutions that have been set up for the poor.
This text is possibly a part of the work on agriculture and manufacturing proposed by Dr. Stokes to the Society which was rejected in 1799.
