| Description | Under the Medical Act (1858) provisions were made for the establishing of conjoint boards of two or more Colleges, under the direction of the General Medical Council, to conduct examinations which could be registered under the act. Between 1859 and 1886 several attempts were made to form a conjoint board in Ireland, eventually in 1886 the Conjoint Examinations Board Ireland was set up by the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. The board conducted preliminary examinations and final medical and surgical examinations, with examiners coming from the two Colleges. Over time a number of specialised Diplomas were also offered by the Conjoint Examinations Board. The College of Surgeons became the main teaching institution for the Joint Board. This section contains the small number of records about the Conjoint Examinations Board preserved by the College of Physicians, the majority relate the establishment of the Board in the 1880s, there are also a series of correspondence files, mainly from the 1950s-60s relating to the Joint Diplomas. |
