| Description | Hard bound manuscript general ledger recording debit and credit accounts of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. There is an alphabetical index by account name at the front of the ledger under the headings: ‘Folio’ [the folio page number in the ledger]; ‘Account’; ‘Paid by’; and ‘Due In’. Each account is separated into debit and credit entries; the title of the debit accounts reads ‘Mater Misericordiae Hospital in account with’ or ‘…on foot of’ whilst the title of the credit accounts states the account name with any extra notes on monetary amount and percentage of stocks or shares invested. Each account notes the months that payments are received or made, the times of which depend on the individual account; some are once a month, some are biannual or triennial. The amounts paid and received each month within a given year are noted, along with the yearly total.
Accounts are for various stocks, shares, bequests and moieties owned, received and invested by the hospital, as well as for rents on properties owned by the hospital. Manuscript notes within accounts detail: the total monetary amount paid to and from each account; the percentage of consolidated or preference stocks or shares in each investment and rate of interest on each; that similar accounts were merged and reinvested; or that accounts were sold and closed. Income from bequests or charitable institutions was sometimes invested in stocks or shares as per the Commissioners of the Charitable Bequest Office.
Entries make reference to older folio entries transferred from an ’old ledger’. Page 35 is missing from the ledger either skipped or pasted together.
