| Description | Printed, signed and dated minutes of the North City Hospital Council including its inaugural meeting on 23 June 1972. The Council consisted of representatives from three major North Dublin city hospitals – Jervis Street Hospital, Mater Misericordiae Hospital and St. Laurence’s Hospital [the former collective name for the Richmond, Hardwicke and Whitworth Hospitals at Grangegorman, Dublin which closed in November 1987 with services transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin]. The functions of the Council were to advise and make recommendations to the individual hospital boards on ‘arrangements for improve existing services by inter-hospital coordination’, coordinating facilities in the constituent hospitals, the organisation and staffing of specialist departments in the north city, make recommendations on policy matters to the individual hospitals ‘arising from the operation of the Health Act 1970’, and ‘to formulate proposals or memoranda for submission to the Minister for Health, or any of the Boards set up under the 1970 Health Act on matters of common interest’. Topics discussed are wide-ranging and include, but are not limited to, accident and emergency services arrangements/rotas within the 3 hospitals; the proposed North City Regional Hospital; the Higher Education Authority; staff appointments, mainly for services that can be shared by all 3 hospitals; training and staffing of pathologists; the provision and allocation of specialist services in Dublin city with a mind to the planned St James Hospital development; dealings with the Department of Health and various Health Boards; discussions around medical departments and clinical services, e.g. Bacteriology, provided by and to the hospitals; medical records services; and financial and other administrative matters.
