| History | Martin Joseph Bray was born on the 22 February 1825 to John and Elleanor Bray (nee Nolan) from Mountrath, Laois, Ireland. Bray registered at Apothecary Hall at age 16 in 1841. Following this he studied medicine in Dublin c.1841-47. He completed his medical examines with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
Bray is noted as having been the physician at Newbridge Dispensary in 1851.
Bray is registered in the Medical Directory for Ireland and Scotland, 1853 with an address of Newbridge, Kildare. L.R.C.S Edin 1847, Anglesey Hosp. Dub. 1850; Med Officer Newbridge and Kildare.
Registered in the Slater Royal National Commercial Directory, 1856, as a Surgeon with an address in Newbridge, Kildare.
He moved to the USA and became a citizen in 1859. The 1860 United States Federal Census places Bray in Chicago, Illinois, working as a physician and surgeon.
