The article looks at the life of students, especially medical ones, in nineteenth century Ireland. Dr Macnamara states that he began undertaking the research to get an idea of the life of his grandfather, Michael Macnamara, who studied medicine in Dublin in the 1830s and 1840s (see MFP/1).
