| Description | This is a leaflet of the 'Bisurated' Magnesia Tablets. The paper-sheet is printed on both sides in back ink. It says: "A Simple and Effective Treatment for Gastric Disorders of the Hyperacid Type AMONGST the various types of gastric disorders, hyperchlorhydria is, without doubt, the most wide spread. This is characterised by an excessive secretion of hydrochloric acid during the course of digestion, and it is the most frequent cause of Gastralgia. Gastralgia, or pain, is often the only symptom present. Over indulgence, excessive alcohol, too highly spiced food, the habit of eating too fast, excessive smoking and nervous tension may all contribute to hyperchlorhydria. In the early stages the patient merely experiences stomach pains after meals; but if neglected the condition will become chronic and cause serious functional disorders. A stomach hindered by excess acid from performing its natural function may exert a harmful influence throughout the whole system. The sufferer will be troubled with numerous manifestations burning pain in the epigastric region, bitter taste in the mouth, acid eructations, vomiting and constipation. The Treatment. Apart from a suitable diet, which is insufficient in itself, a medicament suitable for neutralising the excess hydrochloric acid is usually required. For this purpose attention is called to 'Bisurated' Magnesia, which has proved to be perfectly suitable for transforming the contents of the stomach into a favourable condition for evacuation. It is said that all disorders of th stomach, whatever they may be, give rise to delay in the gastric evacuation. Any delay in gastric evacuation, when it becomes aggravated, will weaken the contractile power of the stomach and thus give rise to a secondary cause of delay, which joins with the primary cause. To this retarded evacuation, primary or secondary, must be attributed those painful symptoms which characterise all stomach disorders. It is, therefore, of utmost importance to pre-scribe a therapeutic agent which will assist the stomach to empty itself in a normal period of time. The danger that always attends uncontrolled hyperchlorhydria is the ultimate development of ulcer, with the symptoms differing from hyperchlorhydria only in P.T.O. degree. There may be vomiting and hæmorrhage; but there is always pain. With these symptoms present and they all spring from the common factor, hyper-chlorhydria-the rational treatment lies in reducing the excess secretion of gastric juice and in neutralising some of the hydrochloric acid content. If, however, the ulcerous stage has been reached, complete rest and immobilisation of the stomach is necessary. 'Bisurated' Magnesia proves extremely effective in all cases of hyperchlorhydria and dyspepsia. It is a well-balanced formula of magnesium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and bismuth subcarbonate. The magnesia neutralises excess acidity, accelerates the evacuation of the stomach and alleviates the pain. Bismuth acts as a soothing agent to an inflamed or ulcerated stomach. It is extremely diffusible and forms a protective coating over the stomach lining to resist the irritation set up by the excess of gastric acidity, and thus inhibits excess gastric secretion. Sodium bicarbonate, as is well-known, has a distinct neutralising action. For convenience in administering the dosage 'Bisurated' Magnesia is now issued in tablet form and is particularly recommended for dyspepsia, also chronic gastritis, gastric pain and spasms, hyperchlorhydria and stomach ulcers. During pregnancy 'Bisurated' Magnesia is extremely helpful in correcting vomiting, which rises sometimes from simple nausea often accompanied by excessive salivation. For these cases two to four 'Bisurated' Magnesia Tablets may be given on rising and several times during the day. General Directions. In cases of hyperchlorhydria "Bisurated' Magnesia Tablets may be taken any time during the day when pain is felt, but as a general rule the best time to take them is an hour or so after meals. Two to four tablets may be taken followed by a half a glass of water.
'Bisurated' Magnesia Tablets are obtainable from all chemists-clinical trial specimens will be sent to doctors on request. BISMAG LIMITED, Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Braydon Road, London, N.16. B.M."
