| Description | This is a glass bottle of liquor bismuth. The cylindrical clear glass bottle features a cork stopper with a red paper label on top, printed in white ink with the inscription: "J.J. GRAHAM & Co., Chemists, DUBLIN". On the body of the bottle there is a white typewritten label in black ink reading: "Liq. Bismuth./Dose. ½ - 1 Dr.". There is a small amount of residue inside the bottle. Liquor bismuth was historically used in medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, particularly diarrhoea, dyspepsia, and gastric irritation. Bismuth compounds were valued for their mild astringent, antacid and protective effects on the stomach lining, helping to soothe inflammation and reduce symptoms associated with indigestion. It was commonly prescribed for cases of gastric discomfort and was later refined into more modern formulations such as bismuth subsalicylate. |
