Liquor bismuth was historically used in medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, particularly diarrhoea, dyspepsia, and gastric irritation. Bismuth compounds were valued for their mild astringent, antacid and protective effects on the stomach lining, helping to soothe inflammation and reduce symptoms associated with indigestion. It was commonly prescribed for cases of gastric discomfort and was later refined into more modern formulations such as bismuth subsalicylate.
