| Description | Alexis FitzGerald was the son of Oliver Fitzgerald (1833-1903) and the grandson of Martin FitzGerald and the great grandson of Alexis FitzGerald (1748-1821). He was the father of Prof. Oliver FitzGerald (1910-1987), Doctor Patrick Alexis Martin FitzGerald (1911-1978), Surgeon at the Jervis Street Hospital, Doctor Gerald Fitzgerald and Alexis James Oliver FitzGerald (1916-1985), Solicitor.
Doctor Alexis FitzGerald L.R.C.P&S (1874-1954) studied medicine at the Catholic University of Ireland. Following his graduation he took up the position of Medical Superintendent at the Waterford District Asylum. This series predominantly focuses on his career as the Assistant Medical Officer (c.1900-1917) and the Medical Superintendent (c.1917-1941) at the Waterford District Asylum (Saint Otteran's Hospital).
