| Description | Collection of papers relating to the proposed Medical Charities Bill (1842) which dealt with the provision of support for dispensaries and fever hospitals, the selection and pay of medical offices and the administration of the system. Corrigan and Robert Harrison published two pamphlets on the subject as well as undertaking extensive research, they wanted the administration to be under the control of the Poor Law Commissioners with a board nominated by the Lord Lieutenant, a view which brought them into conflict the the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons who wanted the control of the system and finance to rest with them. A series of letters covering this disagreement and attacking Corrigan were published in the Dublin Evening Post, although Corrigan won the press battle the government shortly afterwards withdrew the bill. |
