| Description | The Phagocytes was a medical dining club founded in Dublin in 1891. Membership was limited to four surgeons, four physicians and two obstetricians or gynaecologists. The club dined on the first Thursday of the month, except during the summer, with the dinners being held in the members' houses in rotation. The number of dinners could not exceed 12, and the host of the party could invite additional medical men to make up the numbers. In 1914 the club suspended its meeting for the duration of the war, but meetings were never resumed.
In 1914 this material was in the possession of Sir Andrew Horne, who agreed to look after it for the duration of the First World War, it remained with his family after his death in 1924. |
