Minutes of the proceedings of the Managing Committee of Cork Street Fever Hospital

Bound volume containing manuscript minutes of Committee meetings. Includes minutes of meetings of the provisional committee that met with the aim of establishing a house of recovery and fever hospital in the district of the Dublin Liberties.

The minutes show the efforts of the Committee to raise money to fund the establishment of a fever hospital, and to find a plot of suitable ground on which to erect a hospital building. After a proposed purchase of land from Robert Mercer fell through, the Committee resolved on 15 February 1802 to conclude an agreement for an orchard south of Cork Street held by Anne Donnelly in a lease from Alexander Ross. The new building was completed in the space of two years, and the first patients admitted on 14 May 1804.

The minutes also contain information relating to the subsequent management and development of the hospital, including the employment of physicians, expansion of the hospital catchment area, and efforts to deal with fever outbreaks.

GRAHAM & Co., Chemists, DUBLIN". On the body of the bottle there is a white typewritten label in black ink reading: "Liq. Bismuth./Dose. ½ - 1 Dr.". Liquor bismuth was historically used in medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, particularly diarrhoea, dyspepsia, and gastric irritation. Bismuth compounds were valued for their mild astringent, antacid and protective effects on the stomach lining, helping to soothe inflammation and reduce symptoms associated with indigestion. It was commonly prescribed for cases of gastric discomfort and was later refined into more modern formulations such as bismuth subsalicylate.
