HI/2016-7-67 | Eiffel Tower Ascension Souvenir Medal | Commemorative bronze medal issued to individuals as a souvenir of climbling to particular floors of the newly opened Eiffel Tower in 1889. Obverse: image of the Eiffel Tower standing taller than other global monuments, together with their respective heights and the following inscription "LES TRAVAUX ONT COMMENCÉ LE 27 JANV. 1887/LE MONUMENT A ÉTÉ INAUGURÉ LE 6 MAI 1889/INVALIDES 105 : NOT. DAME 66 COLOGNE 159 OPERA 56/G: PYRAMIDE 146 PANTHEON 83 ST PIERRE 132/ARC DE TRIOMPHE 45 ROUEN 150/OBELISQUE WASHINGTON 169/TOUR EIFFEL 300". Reverse: the following inscription "CUIVRE/SOUVENIR/DE MON ASCENSION/AU 1ER ÉTAGE DE/LA TOUR EIFFEL/1889/[USINE] METALLURGIQUE PARISIENNE". There is also a hand-engraved name and date, "E. J. Cameron/Aug. 29th 1898" - presumably the original owner of the souvenir and the date that they visited the attraction. | 1898 |
