The Pfau company was founded in Berlin in 1837 by Heinrich Pfau and was based at Luisenstrasse 48 opposite the Charité. The company was known for the production of surgical instruments and bandages. In 1899, Ludwig Lieberknecht took over the H. Pfau company from his brother-in-law, which he quickly developed into one of the most important companies in the industry, specializing in instruments for ear, nose and throat diseases. In 1926, the H. Pfau company acquired the August Grube company in the small town of Wanfried in northern Hesse. Since then, the instruments have been manufactured in this production facility. There have been several takeovers of the company in recent years, by B. Braun Melsungen AG and Aesculap AG Tuttlingen.
