The Conjoint Examinations Board was set up by the King and Queen's (Royal) College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. The board conducted preliminary examinations and final medical and surgical examinations, with examiners coming from the two Colleges. Over time a number of specialised Diplomas were also offered by the Conjoint Examinations Board. The College of Surgeons became the main teaching institution for the Joint Board.
