  <dc:description>Series of notebooks containing manuscript lecture notes made by Orpen during his time at Edinburgh University. Orpen was the sixth son of the Rev. Thomas Orpen, Rector of Kenmare. Orpen studied medicine at Edinburgh graduating MD in 1763, after which he practiced in Cork. Orpen died in April 1799, he was the father of Thomas Herbert Orpen (c.1775-1845) who went on to become President of the King and Queen's College of Physicians in Ireland (1812 and 1818).</dc:description>
