Smith expresses the hope that excision will replace, not only in England but also other countries 'the time honoured and barbarous method of amputating limb for [ ] of the knee joint. He then provides more details of the case mentioned in his previous letter (RBC/113) which has had, as he feared, a fatal outcome. 13 June 1856
