  <dc:title>Mater Misericordiae Hospital Construction                            </dc:title>
  <dc:description>File consists of a number of photocopies of documents relating to the construction of the Mater Hospital, dating mainly from the 1800’s, obtained by Sr Eugene Nolan RSM. File includes: photocopies of a set of holograph architect and builders receipts produced during the initial construction of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. Receipts contain the amount paid on each occasion by ‘the Reverend Mother of the convent of Our Lady of Mercy, Baggot Street, Dublin’, dated and signed by either the architect John Bourke or the builder John Brady which includes an attached and initialled one penny stamp. Payments to John Bourke are for the drawing up of architectural plans and superintendence of the building project; payments to John Brady are instalments for the building work, and for completion of the front portion facing Eccles Street. Also includes a copy of a Bill of Measurements for the project dated 1 June 1859, contracts and receipts signed by John Brady agreeing to undertake the building work and acknowledging receipt of £1000 from ‘Mesdames Margaret Norris [Superioress], Eliza Maguire and Ellen Whitty’ for said work, dated 27 August 1859; copies of manuscript receipts from other workmen who carried out building work such as plumbing, painting, plastering; copies of various memorandum regarding additions to the building work, and copies of contracts for land purchases surrounding the hospital grounds  dated 25 June 1856-1 Jan 1864 (32p); photocopy of an article from ‘The Dublin Builder’ describing the Mater Misericordiae Hospital dated 1 Oct 1861 (1p); set of holograph notes by Sr Eugene Nolan regarding hospital architect John Bourke and also containing a photocopy of Bourke’s obituary from the Freeman’s Journal 14 November 1871 (c1995; 2p); photocopy of a partial contract drawn up by solicitor Arthur O’Hagan, 9 Harcourt Street, Dublin between Margaret Kirwan, Henrietta Browne and Maria Spain of ‘Baggot Street Convent’ and Patrick Murphy, builder, for work to complete the east wing of the hospital under the direction of architect John Bourke, dated 15 Sept 1868 (4p); photocopy of a draft agreement between Mary Jane Forde, Henrietta Browne, and Eliza Molloy, Convent of Mercy, Baggot Street Dublin, and William Hughes, Talbot Street, builder, for the erection of yard walls and buildings at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital to plans drawn up by John L Robinson, Architect, City of Dublin dated 4 Feb 1874 (3p); typed list briefly describing 6 account books concerning Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Baggot Street, Dublin dated 1845-1869 mentioning funding for the Mater Hospital ([c1995]; 4p); double-sided page of manuscript notes by Sr Eugene Nolan on the Royal Circus civic development, partly the current site of the Mater Hospital ([c1995]; 2p); and a photocopy of a hospital report for [?1971] mentioning work completed on the hospital chapel and decoration of convent - report also includes typed notes of accounts of Catherine McAuley and a copy of the Archbishop of Dublin’s address on the occasion of the hospitals’ centenary in 1961 ([c1971]; 15p).
