  <dc:description>Hard bound volume containing the typed and signed minutes of the Medical Board of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. Minutes have been typed up and pasted into the book and also include manuscript and typed copies of letters read to and written by the Board relating to items on the agenda. These are frequently between the Medical Board and the Sisters of Mercy, the Sister Superior of the Mater Hospital Sr. Mary Kostka Farrell, and latterly Sr. Mary Callistus, and the Reverend Mother in Carysfort Park, Blackrock, Dublin, Sr. M Malachy Mulhearn, and latterly Sr. M Bertrand mainly regarding clinical appointments. Topics which emerge prominently include discussions between the Board and the Reverend Mother, including letters from the President of University College Dublin (April 1915) concerning appointments to the Hospital including the roles of Assistant Surgeons, Assistant Physicians and an Assistant Pathologist; that final year students should have cards issued to them so they can attend Cork Street Fever Hospital (17 December 1915) [see also MMUHA/1/11/1/2 Pupil Register 1894-1930 for students issued with cards]; a dispute between the Medical Board and the Reverend Mother concerning the overlooking of Arthur Chance for the post of Assistant Surgeon, including letters from William Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin (June-July 1916); discussions over lack of surgical staff (Feb; May 1917); payment to clinical staff who were involved in the treatment of injured soldiers (4 February 1918); discussions over nurses hours and leave days( 2 May 1919); retirement of Matron Mary McGivney (15 September 1920); the division and arrangement of clinical classes; retirement of assistant pathologist, the state of the pathology department and provision of pathology lectures including letters from Edmund McWeeney (May-July 1921) [see enclosures MMUHA/1/1/3  11-12]; and the resignation of radiologist Maurice Hayes over working conditions in the X-Ray department including typed copies of correspondence between Dr Hayes and hospital Superioress Sr Mary Callistus, through the medium of the Medical Board (May-June 1922) [see enclosures MMUHA/1/1/3, 14-40].

Enclosures include: a typed copy of a letter from the Acting Secretary of the Medical Board to the Reverend Mother, ‘Convent of the Mother of Mercy’, Carysfort Avenue, Blackrock concerning the appointment of Assistant Surgeons to the Hospital and the withdrawal of Arthur Chance from the applications, with manuscript note by Arthur Chance regarding date (1 Jun 1915; 1p); 2 manuscript letters with printed address of ‘Rock Castle, Portstewart, County Derry’ from Arthur Chance to Alex Blayney concerning Chance’s opinions on the position of the Medical Board within the hospital in relation to the Sisters of Mercy (18 July 1916; 21 July 1916; 4p); 4 manuscript pages of Dr John O’Donnell’s qualifications and testimonials in relation to his application for the post of Physician in the hospital consisting of 2 manuscript notes pinned together, the first on headed notepaper with the address of 3 Merrion Square, Dublin from John O’Donnell, Assistant Physician, Mater Hospital to the Secretary of the Medical Board applying for the post of Physician (24 October 1917; 1p), the second a manuscript testimonial on headed notepaper with the address of 84 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin from Edmund McWeeney, pathologist, Mater Hospital to the Board supporting John O’Donnell for the position (c.24 October 1917; 1p) and the third a manuscript testimonial on headed notepaper titled ‘Public Health Department of the Corporation of Dublin, Cork Hill, Dublin’ from Sir Charles Cameron MD, FRCS, Medical and Executive Officer of Health, supporting John O’Donnell (25 October 1917; 2p); a manuscript note on headed notepaper titled ‘Convent of the Mother of Mercy’, Carysfort Park, Blackrock, Dublin from the Reverend Mother Sr. M Bertrand to Alex Blayney regarding the appointment of Dr McAlister to the post of Assistant Surgeon (8 October 1919; 1p); a typed and signed letter on headed notepaper titled ‘Professor E J McWeeney MD, FRCP, University College Dublin, Department of Pathology, University College, Earslfort Terrace, Dublin’ from Edmund McWeeney to Henry Barniville, 9 Merrion Square, Dublin, regarding McWeeney’s retirement as pathologist in the Mater (9 May 1921; 2p); typed and signed letter on headed notepaper from Reverend Mother Sr M Bertrand, Carysfort Park, Blackrock, Dublin to Henry Barniville regarding the duties of the Assistant Physician (18 October 1921; 1p); and a set of typed and signed correspondence, including signed copies and drafts of letters, between Maurice R J Hayes, Radiologist Mater Hospital, 35 Upper Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin; Superioress of the Mater Hospital Sr M Callistus; and Henry Barniville, Secretary Medical Board, regarding Hayes’ views on working conditions in the X-Ray department and the treatment of Hayes by the hospital, culminating in his resignation (1 May 1922-21 July 1922; 27p).
