  <dc:description>This item is a vaginal speculum of the Sims' type. 
It is made of metal, nickel plated, and consists of a slightly curved handle and double duck-bill, one smaller than the other.
Slight corrosion present.
It was designed by the American physician James Marion Sims in the late 1840s, while studying [on enslaved black women] how to repair vesicovaginal fistulas.
It is still used during gynaecological surgeries for examining the vagina and cervix.</dc:description>
