  <dc:description>Bronze medal commemorating the ophthalmologist Arthur Jacob (1790-1874).  Obverse:  the profile bust of Jacob, facing left, with his surname to the right and the medal designer's name "W WOODHOUSE F" in smaller font, below.  Reverse:  a laurel wreath enclosing the words " IN COMMEMORATION OF EMINENT SERVICES RENDERED TO SCIENCE AND THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IN IRELAND 1860" and around the edge, the words "ARTHUR JACOB. M.D. F.R.C.S. PROF. OF ANAT. &amp; PHYS. ROY. COLL. OF SURG. IN IRELAND."  In a square, reddish brown presentation box with a label attached underneath, which reads  "W. Woodhouse/Die Engraver &amp; Medallist/To the Royal Dublin Society/Trinity College Queens University/in Ireland, Agricultural/Society &amp; Catholic Universities/Kildare Place, Dublin".  Some damage to edge of medal.  Lid and base of presentation box are detached from each other.

"John Woodhouse's medals were catalogued and described by Dr. Frazer in Vol. XVIII of the 'Journal of the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association, 1887-1888'.
