  <dc:description>Balfour Retractor, designed by surgeon Balfour, consists of a metal frame with arms at each end and a central sliding mechanism to self retaing and secure a middle blade (now missing; see reference CSFH/9/4). Hand-engraved with “Theatre,” it was used in Cork Street Fever Hospital for abdominal cavity surgical procedures.</dc:description>
