| Admin/Biog History | Armide Lyonesse Tollemache Oppé (1910-1995) was Paul Oppé's daughter.
Like her mother, Valentine Oppé (ref: APO/12/2), Armide showed a keen interest in contemporary classical music, ballet and theatre. While studing at Somerville College, Oxford, she regularly attended concerts and recitals. Later in life, she became friends with several musicians, most notable among them were the Spanish classical pianist, Gonzalo Soriano, and the Hungarian vioinist, Joseph Szigeti. She remained friends with both men until their deaths and significantly assisted them in their careers - particularly in the case of Szigeti for whom she helped write two books and organised reissues of his recordings on LP.
Armide was also very involved in Paul Oppé's work, particularly the management and maintenance of his collection of old masterworks and British drawings. In his later life, Armide helped Paul with research enquiries on the collection and, after his death, took on full ownership of the British drawings. She still continued to field requests for loans and assist researchers until she died.
Armide never married and had no children. |
