Admin/Biog HistoryOppé began to collect of works by Towne after purchasing seventeen drawings together in a single lot at an auction held by Foster's on 27 July 1910. After purchasing several more drawings by the artist, he became acquainted with the Merivale Family, descendents of John Merivale, a friend and student of Towne who had been bequethed a large collection of drawings by him. Over time, Oppé catalogued this large collection of drawings and wrote the following article which helped establish the reputation of the hitherto little-known artist:
