How do I search the catalogue?
There are two main ways to search the catalogue:

1. Simple search
The simple search is accessed via the ‘Google-style’ search box at the top right of the Home Page. To perform a simple search, type your search term into the box – for instance ’Reynolds’ or ’Knole’ – and click the Search button.

You may wish to combine search terms in your simple searches using the Boolean “and, or, not” searching options:

+ represents Boolean And, meaning the search result must include this word
- represents Boolean Not, meaning the search result must exclude this word
| represents Boolean Or, meaning the search result may include this word

Place one of these symbols before a word or phrase to apply it. If no symbols are used, Boolean “And” is assumed.

The simple search only searches the Title and Description fields so if you don’t find what you’re looking for you can try an advanced search.

2. Advanced search
The advanced search is found on the vertical strip on the left hand side of the Home page: click on the ‘search the catalogue’ button.

Using the ’Any text’ search box is the most comprehensive way of searching the catalogue. You can also search on specific fields (eg. Date; Title etc.).

You may enter your search terms into any of the boxes, but you do not have to use every box. The narrower your search terms are, the fewer hits you will receive.

By default, a search will look for the word or words you have entered. However you can change this default setting by clicking the ‘Refine search criteria’ button and selecting from the following three options:

With all the words
With at least one of the words
Without the words
